Marriage Licenses
- How do you apply for a marriage license?

You must come in together with your intended spouse to the Town Clerk's Office. This process needs to be done in person and can take up to 30 minutes. We are open Monday & Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday & Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please plan on coming in at least 30 minutes prior to closing.
- Do you need to be a Winthrop resident to apply for a marriage license in Winthrop?

- What do we need to bring with us?

You must bring an acceptable form of picture identification - Driver's License - Passport, etc. The cost is $35 and we accept cash, check or credit card. You must have the ability to tell us the correct spelling of parents names, dates of birth, country of birth, etc.
- What if one or both of us is under 18?

You must go to court and obtain a court order (permission) to marry.
- How long after the application will the license be issued?

The license will be issued three days later. The license can be picked up by either applicant at the Clerk's Office, Monday through Thursday. The office is not open on Friday. Please review the license carefully for errors. There will be a $25 fee to retype a marriage license after it has been released from this office.
- How long after issuance is the license valid?

The license is valid sixty days from the day the couple came into the office to apply and may be used in any Massachusetts city or town. However, it is not valid outside of the state.
- How much does it cost?

The cost in Winthrop is $35 to file Marriage Intentions and a receive license to marry.
- How can I get a copy of my marriage license?

Assuming the license was issued by the Winthrop Town Clerk's Office, you can physically enter the office or request a copy by mail. Please send a self-addressed stamped envelope along with this the Marriage Cert Request Form (PDF).
The cost for a copy is $10.
